Civil Engineering
Civil engineering
The B.Sc. Degree Program in Civil Engineering was launched in October 2005 EC. The program is being coordinated by Civil Engineering Department under the faculty of construction technology. The office of the Civil Engineering Department, Secretarial and Documentation Services are located at the new Building, ground floor. The aim of the civil engineering program is to provide students with a broad and thorough education in civil engineering fundamentals, applications, and design that prepares them for the practice of civil engineering at the professional level. The program provides a broad and thorough education in mathematics, physics, engineering mechanics, and civil engineering, coupled with application of modern engineering tools. Graduates attain the skills for entry-level civil engineering positions leading to professional engineering registration, and will have a solid undergraduate foundation in general civil engineering principles, enabling continued education at advanced levels.
Vision, Mission and Core Values
The department works in line with the vision, mission and core values of the college. It is committed to using innovative approaches to ensure the continuous enhancements of human resources and in particular to produce qualified professionals who are well prepared to meet local and global development needs in the fields of Civil Engineering
Guided by the Mission of the College, the Civil Engineering department is committed to preparing students who will be thoughtful, responsible, and successful citizens. Students at the end of their fifth year study will:
- Become competent engineering professionals who can apply their technical and managerial skills in the planning, design, construction, operation or maintenance of the built in environment and global infrastructure, and utilizing their skills to analyze and design systems, specify project methods and materials, perform cost estimates and analyze, and manage technical activities in support of civil engineering projects.
- Initiate an active program of life-long learning, including studies leading to professional licensure or an advanced degree in engineering that provides for continued development of their technical abilities and management skills, and attainment of professional expertise.
- Developed their communication skills in oral, written, visual and graphic modes when working as team members or leaders, so they can actively participate in their communities and their profession.
- Established an understanding of professionalism, ethics, quality performance, public policy, safety, and sustainability that allows them to be professional leaders and contributors to society when solving engineering problems and producing civil engineering solutions.
Objectives of the Program
The graduates will be equipped with the knowledge that enables them to execute the following tasks:
- Undertake project identification, pre-feasibility and feasibility study and detail design of civil engineering works.
- Prepare complete design documents in civil engineering, monitor and evaluate the operation and maintenance works.
- Remodel and rehabilitate of existing design works.
Infrastructure
Generally, all the classes of Civil Engineering program are taught in the old and new buildings of Addis College. There are adequate lecture/tutorial/class rooms for delivering teaching and learning process. Teaching and learning in general is supported by the use of modern technology. There are four general-purpose PC labs which are accessible to students and researchers in civil engineering. These labs have an average of 30-networked PCs. They are located in two different buildings. There are also computersready for word processing, spreadsheet and database and power point applications to facilitate the Program to be effective.
Academic and Support Staff
The quality of an educational program depends strongly on the quality of the staff who provide teaching and student support. The department has well qualified academic staff who can teach the courses and to give project works necessary to qualify in Civil Engineering program.
